LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Wednesday approved ten demands for grants worth Rs270.53 billion during a budget session marked by opposition protests and heated political exchanges. The debate on the budget and approval of expenditures unfolded in a charged political atmosphere.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan oversaw proceedings as Provincial Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman concluded the budget debate, defending the government’s fiscal priorities and overall performance. He also paid tribute to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Field Marshal, Syed Asim Munir, stating that Pakistan had played a historic role in facilitating diplomatic progress between Iran and the United States.
The finance minister said Punjab had contributed Rs546 billion to the federal government in support of national prosperity and would extend further assistance if required. He also claimed that 99 percent of the revenue collection target had been achieved during the current fiscal year.
During discussions on cut motions related to the Home Department and the police, sharp exchanges took place between treasury and opposition members.
