Terrorists groups operating in Afghanistan: Pakistan demands Taliban take urgent action

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan called for immediate, credible, and verifiable action by the Taliban authorities against terrorist groups to ensure that Afghan territory is not used for terrorist activities against any country.

The demand was put forward by Pakistan during the 12th round of the Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group on Countering International Terrorism held in Islamabad on Tuesday. The discussion focused on regional terrorist threats, with particular focus on terrorism emanating from Afghanistan and the risks it posed to neighbouring states and broader regional security.

Pakistan emphasized the need for immediate and verifiable action by the relevant authorities in Afghanistan against these terrorist groups to ensure that Afghan territory is not used as a base for planning and conducting terrorist activities against any country.

The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Lyubinsky, while the Pakistani delegation was led by Ambassador Khalid Jamali, Additional Foreign Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan.

The two sides also deliberated on emerging trends in terrorism, including the use of new methods for financing and recruitment by terrorist organisations, and the need for coordinated responses to these evolving threats. The two sides expressed satisfaction with the growing trajectory of bilateral cooperation on counterterrorism and identified avenues for deepening engagement at regional and international forums, especially the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
