LAHORE: The Punjab government has successfully concluded its three-day Eid-ul-Azha cleanliness operation, disposing of a record 360,000 tons of animal waste across the province.
To celebrate the milestone, a formal ceremony was held at Liberty Chowk here on Friday, where Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique announced a Rs 10,000 Eid reward for each Suthra Punjab worker. Officials praised the historic arrangements, which utilised over 184,000 workers and 60,000 vehicles to maintain unprecedented levels of hygiene during the festive period.
On this occasion, Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed, Commissioner Lahore Maryam Khan, Deputy Commissioner Lahore Muhammad Ali Ijaz, Suthra Punjab Authority DG Babar Sahib Din, and Focal Person Suthra Punjab Asim Mehmood were also present in the ceremony.
During a media briefing on the Eid operation, the minister expressed gratitude to citizens for their cooperation in cleanliness efforts and highlighted the dedication and hard work of the Suthra Punjab team, who worked tirelessly in the scorching heat.
He disclosed that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had provided additional resources during Eid to ensure the convenience of the citizens. He continued that he visited various cities before and during Eid.
“Rapid action was taken in response to public complaints during Eid. Additionally, the Chief Minister closely monitored the operation, providing necessary instructions along the way. To prevent unpleasant odours, rose water, phenyl, and lime were used. Pits were created in nearby areas for animal waste disposal, resulting in such cleanliness that it felt as if no sacrifices had been made during Eid. Throughout the cities he visited, the people praised the cleanliness arrangements made,” he added.
He mentioned that a cleaning plan was formulated at the union council level for Eid-ul-Azha, with assistance from Safe City cameras for monitoring the efforts. He said that Suthra Punjab has made remarkable strides in providing a healthy and clean environment for citizens.
“The standard of cleanliness in Punjab has now become a benchmark for the entire country, with other provinces acknowledging the accomplishments of the Suthra Punjab programme,” he added.
