HYDERABAD: Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), with the support of Asian Venture Philanthropy Network, organised five climate adaptation awareness sessions across five villages in District Sanghar, reaching 155 women cotton workers.
The sessions aimed to enhance understanding of climate change impacts on agriculture-based livelihoods, labor productivity, and the health of women agricultural workers, while equipping them with practical coping and adaptation strategies.
Speaking on the occasion, Javed Hussain, Executive Director of SCF, highlighted that rising temperatures are significantly reducing the working capacity of women cotton workers. He noted that extreme heat is not only affecting productivity but also posing serious health risks, while many growers remain less responsive to climate challenges, often lacking basic measures such as shaded areas and vegetation around fields.
Dr Hira Arain addressed participants on the impact of climate change on livestock, emphasizing its critical role in rural livelihoods and the need for climate-smart livestock management practices.
Sessions facilitated by Raees Alvi and Meer Murtaza Noonari focused on community resilience and collective adaptation strategies. Women participants were encouraged to adopt practical measures such as heat stress management, proper hydration, use of protective clothing, and adjusting working hours to reduce exposure to extreme heat.
Participants actively engaged in discussions and demonstrated strong interest in adopting low-cost, locally relevant adaptation techniques. The sessions also emphasized collective action, enabling women to advocate for safer and more climate-resilient working conditions.
