KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief, Monem Zafar Khan has alleged that the Sindh government, led by the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), is misusing billions of rupees under the pretext of garbage collection in the city.
Speaking at the inauguration of “Bagh Ali” Family Park in Block 7, UC-4, Gulberg Town on Thursday Monem Zafar said that the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, which functions under the provincial government, is responsible for waste collection. He added that the “occupying mayor” also serves as its chairman.
He said, “The public is questioning why the solid waste department has failed and why piles of garbage continue to line the roadsides and various parts of the city.” He added that while garbage collection is not the responsibility of town administrations, JI’s town chairmen have been using their own budgets to improve cleanliness.
The JI Karachi Chief was joined by Gulberg Central District Ameer Kamran Siraj and Gulberg Town Chairman Nusratullah at the ceremony. The park was reopened after renovation, beautification, and reconstruction.
Highlighting the party’s development efforts, Monem Zafar said that Gulberg Town has delivered 42 parks over the last three years. Across the nine towns where JI holds influence, 240 parks have been restored and 48 playgrounds revived.
“JI’s vision is clear: to serve the public and continue the journey of development and progress. Alongside this mission, we will continue our struggle for Karachi’s rightful resources and powers,” he said.
He pointed out that the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board receives Rs1.3 billion annually per union committee, yet the condition of garbage on the city’s roads remains visibly poor. During the rainy season, he added, waste piles worsen the situation.
The annual budget of the Solid Waste Management Board is Rs43 billion, while the Water Corporation’s budget stands at Rs47 billion, Monem Zafar pointed out. Despite this, he said, more than half the city still lacks access to clean drinking water and no effective garbage disposal system exists.
Referring to criticism of JI’s work, including the recent inauguration of a road from Ziauddin Hospital to KDA Road and Jifco Ground, he remarked: “To those troubled by our progress, we only say: work hard instead of being jealous, and fulfil your own responsibilities.”
Residents gave the JI leader a warm welcome, presenting him with flower garlands and appreciating the efforts of JI’s elected representatives. UC-4 Chairman Syed Azeemullah Hussaini and Park Director Nadeem Hanif also addressed the ceremony.
