Rs700m material ‘theft’: NA panel to lodge FIRs against HAZECO residents

ISLAMABAD: A sub-committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Power has decided to register FIRs against residents of Hazara Electric Supply Company (HAZECO) who have allegedly not handed over company material worth Rs 700 million which is reportedly being kept in their homes.

The sub-committee, comprising Babar Nawaz Khan, Shaikh Aftab Ahmed, Syed Waseem Hussain, and Syed Nosheen Iftikhar, discussed the affairs of HAZECO.

Convener of the sub-committee, Babar Nawaz Khan, informed members that he had received a comprehensive report, along with copies of identity cards of individuals allegedly in possession of company property, including transformers, wires, and poles.

He stated that initial notices would be served to those retaining the material. If they fail to comply, FIRs will be registered against them, as the material was procured using public funds.

The CEO of HAZECO informed the committee that load shedding on 11-KV feeders is carried out based on AT&C losses and that the same policy is being applied uniformly across other DISCOs in accordance with existing regulations.

He explained that when AT&C losses decrease on a particular feeder, the duration of load shedding is revised accordingly or completely withdrawn.

He further stated that employees from both organisations are currently in transition under the PTA, a process that will continue until June 30, 2026.

“We are undertaking preparatory work for future upgradation and promotions at the HAZECO level will be considered once the transition under the BTA is completed,” he added.

The sub-committee was also informed that a team from PPMC is visiting the HAZECO area to verify facts regarding the location of a proposed grid station and the expenditure to be incurred. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 800 million, but progress on the ground remains negligible.

The PPMC team is scheduled to visit the site on Thursday (Feb 26) and will submit a preliminary report to the sub-committee, while a detailed report will follow later.

The CEO of the company apprised the panel that a detailed business plan of the company will be submitted to Nepra by April 2026.
