LAHORE: The Punjab government has released Rs 20 billion to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of house construction under the ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ programme.

According to the Punjab Housing Department’s spokesperson on Monday, this step reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining momentum in the construction of homes for deserving families and providing them with a roof of their own.

More than 121,000 families have received interest-free loans, and over 26,000 additional families will be able to receive instalment payments immediately. At present, more than 43,000 houses are under construction across the province, demonstrating the scale and pace of the programme.

He further stated that more than Rs 172 billion has been spent so far on house construction under the programme, while over Rs 6 billion has been successfully recovered. In addition, more than 112,000 families have been issued the second instalment to complete the construction of their homes, he added.

The government has set a target to construct 500,000 houses over the next five years, to be achieved in phases. According to the spokesperson, a large number of deserving families are benefiting from the ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme, and the loan disbursement process has been kept simple, transparent, and merit-based.
