KARACHI: At least 13 people including women and children were killed and several others injured in a major traffic accident on the M9 Super Highway near Ansari Bridge in Karachi on Friday, officials said.
The collision involved an oil tanker and a passenger bus on the M9 Motorway, close to the Ansari Bridge. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as several victims remain in critical condition.
The bodies and injured passengers were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where an emergency was imposed to ensure immediate medical treatment.
Hospital sources said the identities of the deceased and injured had not yet been confirmed.
Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad expressed grief over the incident and directed hospital staff to provide the best possible care to the victims.
He instructed doctors and paramedics to leave no stone unturned in treating the injured and ordered the administration and relevant agencies to speed up rescue and relief operations.
“The protection of citizens’ lives and property is our top priority,” Murad said, adding that the city administration stands with the affected families in this difficult time. He also offered prayers for the departed souls.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Sindh Police directed senior officers to reach the scene immediately and secure the area. Authorities placed relevant departments on high alert due to oil leakage and potential safety risks.
Police and rescue officials were instructed to ensure safe and quick access for ambulances and emergency teams. Traffic was diverted to alternative routes to facilitate relief operations and prevent further congestion.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are underway.
