ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday strongly condemned the prevailing situation in Afghanistan, stating that the Taliban regime has created conditions similar to — or even worse than — those that existed before the 9/11 attacks, when terrorist organisations posed serious threats to global peace.
In a statement issued after a suicide bombing at Khadijat-ul-Kubra Imam-bargah during Friday prayers that killed at least 36 people and injured more than 169 worshippers, the president said that Pakistan’s eastern neighbour was facilitating the Taliban regime, thereby threatening not only Pakistan but also regional and global stability.
President Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s long-held stance that terrorism cannot be countered by any single country in isolation. He said that Pakistan’s experience had shown that when terrorist groups are allowed space, facilitation or impunity beyond national borders, innocent civilians across the world ultimately suffer the consequences.

He further noted that certain neighbouring countries had regrettably become “partners in crime” by allowing terrorist elements to operate against Pakistan from their territory. Some, he added, were not only financing these groups but also providing them with technical and military assistance — a reality that has significantly shaped regional developments in recent years.
The president thanked world leaders and nations for standing with Pakistan during this time of grief. He said the country was humbled by the strong and sincere outpouring of support and solidarity from international leaders, governments and organisations.
He noted that the messages of sympathy and solidarity have brought comfort to the people of Pakistan and strength to the families who mourn. He said these messages reaffirm that the fight against terrorism and the violent ideology that drives it, is a shared global responsibility and a common struggle for all.
He said that Pakistan remains deeply grateful for the compassion and support extended to the country in this difficult hour. He said the solidarity shown by the international community strengthens Pakistan’s resolve to continue working with partners for peace, stability and a decisive end to terrorism in all its forms.
