KARACHI: The Sindh government, taking a major step to control water theft in Karachi, has established a tribunal that was inaugurated by Chief Justice of High Court of Sindh, Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput, on Monday, with Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab present at the ceremony.

Through this unprecedented move, Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation has been granted expanded powers to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against illegal water extraction and distribution.

For the first time in the city’s history, the special tribunal has been established to ensure the swift hearing and disposal of water theft cases.

The ceremony held at KW&SC’s Head Office was also attended by KW&SC Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer, Engineer Asadullah Khan, Chief Financial Officer Ammar Ali Khan, and tribunal judge Munir Bakhsh Bhutto.

Following the ceremony, the SHC Chief Justice and the Mayor visited the Hydrants Cell Management and Complaint Management Center, where they were briefed on operational mechanisms, water supply management, citizen grievances redressal systems, and ongoing operation against illegal connections.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that the special tribunal would have full legal authority for faster and more efficient proceedings against water theft. He emphasized that case related to water theft would be resolved on a priority basis to ensure accountability. The Mayor described the establishment of the tribunal as a major milestone in safeguarding the citizens’ rights and interest, and preserving Karachi’s vital water resources. The Sindh government would show no leniency towards those involved in water theft.

The Water Corporation has started implementing hard decisions and taking strict legal action against the elements involved in illegal activities.
