ISLAMABAD: The Flood Commission of Pakistan (FCP) has issued a flash flood warning for the River Kabul and its tributaries for January 22–23, 2026.
According to the latest hydro-meteorological conditions prevailing over the country, the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Lahore, has warned that a strong westerly wave is likely to affect the upper parts of the country from the evening of January 21 to January 24, 2026. Consequently, water flows in the River Kabul and its associated tributaries are expected to rise during January 22–23, 2026.
The FCP stated that due to the expected moderate to isolated heavy rainfall, coupled with snowfall over upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—including Swat, Chitral, Buner, Shangla, Lower and Upper Dir, Malakand, Bajaur, Mardan, Swabi, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Haripur, Kolai-Palas, and Kohistan—as well as Kashmir, the risk of flash flooding cannot be ruled out.
In view of the situation, all concerned organisations—particularly the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including all relevant District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), district administrations, and field formations of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigation Department—have been advised to remain on alert and ensure that all necessary precautionary measures are taken in a timely manner to prevent loss of precious human lives and damage to public and private property, as well as irrigation and flood protection infrastructure.
