PESHAWAR: Registration with the Excise Department has been made mandatory for all private taxis operating in Peshawar district. The registered taxis will be given a uniform colour and special stickers containing QR codes will also be displayed on them.

These decisions were taken in a meeting held here on Thursday with Commissioner Peshawar Division/Chairman Regional Transport Authority Riaz Khan Mehsud in the chair. The aim of these measures is to regulate the traffic system and ensure indiscriminate action against illegal transport, control traffic congestion in the provincial capital Peshawar and provide better and safer travel facilities to the citizens.

The participants of the meeting decided that a stern legal action will be taken against taxis operating without registration or stickers, and the challan and vehicle will be seized. The meeting also issued orders to immediately close more than 100 illegal transport, Qingqi and high-speed bases established across the district and to arrest the contractors responsible for them.

It has been decided to close all unnecessary U-turns and launch a mega operation against encroachments to improve traffic flow on Charsadda Road and Kohat Road. Similarly, it was also decided to relocate BRT stations that were obstructing the flow of traffic on these roads to open areas. Special teams comprising Assistant Commissioners, Traffic Police and Regional Transport Authority have been formed to take

action against rickshaws and loaders operating illegally on the BRT main route.

Additionally, trucks, tractor trolleys, and other freight vehicles will be banned to enter the city and major highways before 10:00 p.m. To maintain the flow of traffic towards the Peshawar Motorway, the Police, Customs, Excise and Narcotics Control Department have been directed to shift their check posts to open locations and take effective measures to ensure uninterrupted flow of traffic.

Those who attended the meeting were included Member of National Assembly Asif Khan, Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Captain Sanaullah (retd), Chief Traffic Officer Zaidullah, Secretary Regional Transport Authority Abrar Wazir and other relevant officers participated.

Addressing the meeting, Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud said that strict and immediate measures are essential to end traffic congestion in Peshawar. He directed all relevant institutions to ensure the implementation of the approved decisions without delay, while any negligence in this regard will not be tolerated.
