ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday inaugurated the Iqbal Flyover at T-Chowk and a signal-free corridor on the Islamabad Expressway, marking the completion of two major infrastructure projects designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital.
The projects, which were completed in just 77 days for Rs1.4 billion, are expected to significantly improve traffic flow for vehicles entering Islamabad from the GT Road, officials said during a briefing at the inauguration ceremony.
“The completion of these projects in such a short time is a remarkable achievement,” the prime minister said, praising the efforts of all departments involved. “These initiatives are aimed at providing greater convenience to the public and enhancing the overall travel experience in the capital,” he added.
The new infrastructure is particularly aimed at resolving the long-standing traffic congestion at T-Chowk, a key junction in Islamabad.
“Traffic jams at T-Chowk were a frequent issue, and these projects will permanently address this problem,” said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
He also announced plans to construct a service road alongside the Islamabad Expressway to further ease traffic movement. The new infrastructure is aligned with the government’s broader Vision 2027 plan, which aims to modernise Islamabad through infrastructure upgrades, improved public services, sustainable urban planning, and enhanced quality of life.
Naqvi stated that the government is actively pursuing the Vision 2027 plan for the development of the federal capital. Under this initiative, he added, a total of 134 public welfare projects are set to be completed.
Officials said the signal-free corridor and the Iqbal Flyover would not only improve daily commutes for residents but also support the city’s long-term urban planning goals.
The completion of these projects is seen as a significant milestone in improving transportation in Islamabad and reducing traffic bottlenecks.
The inauguration is expected to bring immediate relief to commuters and enhance overall traffic management in the city, officials noted.
