ISLAMABAD: In a move aimed at addressing growing concerns over the treatment of its imprisoned leader, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday agreed to the proposal by the adviser to the prime minister on political affairs, Rana Sanaullah, to establish a special committee tasked with reviewing the facilities provided to former prime minister Imran Khan while in prison.

The decision was made during a joint meeting of PTI’s parliamentary committee, which included members from both the National Assembly and Senate, as well as Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who was appointed by Khan as the opposition leader in the National Assembly.

Sources familiar with the discussions said that the proposal was met with widespread approval among PTI lawmakers, with Achakzai and other party leaders supporting the creation of the committee.

Sanaullah’s offer, according to party insiders, is designed to ensure transparency regarding Khan’s detention and the conditions he faces in prison.

PTI leaders emphasised that their goal is to have a clear understanding of the facilities provided to Khan, amid accusations of his mistreatment.

Under the terms of the agreement, the proposed committee will include PTI lawyers, senators, and National Assembly members, who will be tasked with directly evaluating Khan’s living conditions in jail.

In a key development, the sources said that Sanaullah will lead the committee, which will also be accompanied by PTI legal experts and representatives to assess the conditions in person.

A senior PTI official underscored that the party’s primary concern is ensuring that Khan’s incarceration is being handled in accordance with the law, and that he is receiving fair and humane treatment.

The formation of the committee comes as tensions between the government and opposition continue to escalate, with PTI persistently raising issues about the fairness of Khan’s imprisonment and the political motivations behind it.

The decision to accept Sanaullah’s proposal is seen as a strategic move by PTI to maintain pressure on the government while seeking clarity on the conditions faced by its founding leader.
