ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday sharply condemned the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for launching a malicious campaign against its jailed leader, Imran Khan, and his family.

In a statement issued after a press conference by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, PTI spokesman Sheikh Waqas Akram accused the government of using the smear campaign as a diversion from the country’s worsening crises, which he attributed to the ruling regime’s “self-serving” and “short-sighted” policies.

Akram specifically targeted the Sharif family, accusing them of hypocrisy in their attempts to define patriotism.

He referred to the family’s past engagements with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contrasting them with Imran Khan’s stance, which, he argued, had never involved compromising national interests.

“Their rhetoric is a desperate attempt to distract from the deep-rooted economic, political, and constitutional crises that they themselves have exacerbated,” he added.

He also rejected the government’s claims about the conditions of Khan’s detention, describing a recent press conference by the Tarars as “factually baseless” and driven by political panic.

According to Akram, this reflected the government’s “fear” of Khan, whom he described as a “nightmare” for the ruling party.

On Khan’s detention, Akram said the former prime minister remained in solitary confinement under harsh conditions, deprived of basic rights.

He criticized the government for denying Khan access to personal physicians and blocking visits from his family, including his sons, for months.

“The government’s attacks are a sign of insecurity,” he said, adding that the public was now fully aware of the “true culprits” behind the country’s ongoing struggles.

He vowed that PTI and the public would continue their fight for democracy, rule of law, and judicial independence.

“The days of this corrupt regime are numbered,” he concluded, warning that the masses would soon hold the government accountable for its actions.
