LAHORE: Punjab Energy Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar on Tuesday said the provincial government is prioritising a shift toward modern, low-emission and energy-efficient power generation systems.
During a visit to the 1,263MW Punjab Thermal Power Plant Limited (PTPL) in Jhang, the minister directed the management to adopt a comprehensive strategy to improve operational performance, reduce costs and strengthen long-term sustainability.
Energy Secretary Farrukh Naveed and PTPL CEO Salman Zakaria briefed the minister on the plant’s operations, financial structure and future plans. Officials said PTPL was established in 2017 to develop an RLNG-based combined-cycle power plant at Haveli Bahadur Shah, with the Punjab government holding 30 percent equity and the remainder financed by local lenders.
Zakaria said the plant uses Siemens Energy’s advanced combined-cycle technology from Germany, offering an efficiency of 61.16 percent, making it among the country’s most efficient units. The plant achieved commercial operations on June 23, 2023, and can supply 10.5 billion units annually to the national grid.
The minister inspected key sections of the facility and planted a tree alongside the Energy Secretary as part of a green initiative. He said the energy sector remains central to Punjab’s and Pakistan’s economic growth.
“Our priority is transparency, quality and cost efficiency. PTPL reflects the Punjab government’s long-term vision for reliable and sustainable energy,” he said. The minister reaffirmed that future energy projects will be developed to international standards to ensure affordable, reliable and environment-friendly electricity for consumers.
