LAHORE: The Punjab government has signalled a possible easing of vegetable prices as steady inflows of tomatoes, onions and potatoes strengthen supply lines across the province.
According the Price Control & Commodities Management, food prices are currently stable, and market trends suggest further relief for consumers in the coming days. An official of the department noted that tomato prices have already softened, with retail rates standing at Rs 84 per kg after a consistent rise in supply.
As many as 150 trucks loaded with tomatoes reached different markets across Punjab on Saturday, with 67 percent of the supply originating from Sindh and another 18 percent from Balochistan. Additional consignments from Sindh expected this month could push prices down even further.
Onions are showing a similar pattern as around 330 trucks of onions made their way into Punjab’s markets, ensuring ample stock at Rs 91 per kg. Punjab currently receives 40 percent of its onion supply from Sindh, 32 percent from Balochistan, and 16 percent from within the province. “With stronger arrivals anticipated in December, onion prices are also likely to ease,” the official said.
Potato rates appear poised for a decline as well. Continuous daily arrivals from Khushab, Sialkot and Gujranwala have kept potatoes available at Rs 61 per kg, and rising stocks could lead to reduced prices in the near future.
A spokesperson of the department stressed that ensuring affordable essential commodities remains a top priority for the Punjab government. All available resources are being deployed to maintain market stability, while strict action awaits those found selling above the notified rates. “No leniency will be shown to violators,” the official added.
With supply momentum expected to accelerate through December, market observers say the province is inching toward a likely dip in prices of key kitchen staples — a development that could offer welcome relief to households amid persistent inflationary pressures.
