ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghan security forces continued to exchange heavy fire on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border on Wednesday following several Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants were killed in a clash on the border with Frontier Corps (FC) in which one security personnel got martyrdom and four others were injured.

Official and local sources told Business Recorder that heavy weapons were being used till Wednesday night from both sides, following the Afghan Taliban joined forces with the TTP in attacking Pakistani border posts in Gavi and Spina Shaga areas on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Kurram District.

The sources said that the TTP militants attacked a border security post in Gavi mountainous area of the upper Kurram district on Monday in which the security forces retaliated forcefully and reports claimed that around eight TTP militants were killed and several others were injured.

They said that an FC solider – Asif – also embraced martyrdom and four others were injured when a mortar shell hit a border security post in Spina Shaga areas on the Pak-Afghan border.

Local sources told this correspondent on Wednesday that the situation was tense in the bordering areas as both sides were enhancing deployment while the exchange of fire continued in Spina Shaga area by using heavy and medium arms against each other positions.

Due to the tension, they added that Kharlachi border crossing between the two countries was shut for an unidentified period and extreme vigilance was witnessed in all the bordering areas including Borki, Tari Mangal, Bughdi, and Kharlachi areas.

However, no official statement has been issued either by the ISPR or the Foreign Office with regard to the latest tension between the two neighbouring countries.

Pakistan has been asking the Afghan interim government of Taliban to take action against Afghanistan-based TTP which is involved in terrorism in Pakistan. However, the Afghan side continues to show reluctance in taking any practical action against the group.
