On the International Day for Non-Violence and to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres appealed to the international community to call for a global ceasefire, especially in the midst of a crippling pandemic which threatens to push millions back into poverty.

Guterres added, “this international day highlights the remarkable power of non-violence and peaceful protest”, stating that “it is now time to uphold the values that Gandhi lived by: the promotion of dignity, equal protection for all, and communities living together in peace”. The Secretary General has been calling for an international ceasefire since the onset of the pandemic, stating that conflict would serve as an impediment to controlling the spread of a deadly virus, and would place more lives at jeopardy.

He added that “a ceasefire would ease immense suffering, lower the risk of famine, and create space for negotiations towards peace”.
