wa-LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party Punjab President and Federal Minister for Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo has said a caretaker setup will not be formed on directions of Tahrik-e-Minhajul Quran Chief Dr Tahirul Qadri even if he launches several "long marches."

 

Exclusively talking to APP after presiding over a meeting with PPP office-bearers of Gujranwala division at the Governor's House on Friday, he advised Tahirul Qadri not to undermine his respect in society for a activity in which he was not even a stakeholder.

 

He said next general elections could not be postponed even for a single day according to the constitution. To a question, he said consensus would be developed among all political parties in parliament for a unanimous caretaker setup as not a single party wanted to the derail democratic process.

 

Wattoo appreciated the decision of the MQM leadership of not supporting the long march and said it was a wise decision, adding the MQM was part of the coalition which had finalised the democratic electoral system.

 

He said that all political parties, judiciary, media and civil society wanted a sustainable democratic system.     

 

Wattoo said a unanimous free, independent and strong election commission had been formed which would hold fair elections and it could check anyone on an unconstitutional activity.

 

He reiterated the caretaker setup would be constituted in March and all political parties including the PPP was doing homework for the next elections.

 

He said, "The PPP will first finalise candidates and then bring them in the field with its manifesto, sacrifices and achievements like amendments to the constitution, Benazir Income Support Program, provincial autonomy, autonomy for Gilgit-Baltistan, restoration of sacked employees and partnership of workers in departments."

 

"The PPP is also working on an accountability bill and south Punjab province and it has drawn a political roadmap for the nation so that no one could derail democracy," he added.

 

Earlier, Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo presided over a meeting of office-bearers of the PPP from Gujranwala division in which several party issues including names of future candidates and a strategy for elections were discussed.

 

He listened to problems of the workers and assured them of their resolution.

 

PPP Punjab General Secretary Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Punjab Information Secretary Raja Amir, Gujranwala divisional president Ijaz Sama, MNA Tariq Tarar, Sialkot president Tahir Akhtar, Mandi Bahaoddin president Dewan Shamim, Gujrat president Tahir Zaman Kaira, Hafizabad president Fayyaz Awan, Narowal president Anwarul Haq and Gujranwala district president Abdullah Virk attended the meeting.
