US mourns death of Gilgit-Baltistan doctor who died after contracting coronavirus

• Dr Usama Riaz was working at a medical facility screening pilgrims returning to Pakistan from the Pakistan-Iran border at Taftan.

The United States of America condoled the death of a doctor from Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) who died on Sunday after contracting the novel coronavirus.

Dr Usama Riaz was working at a medical facility screening pilgrims returning to Pakistan from the Pakistan-Iran border at Taftan. The doctor fell ill after he returned from work, and was placed on a ventilator after his test came positive.

In a tweet on Tuesday, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice Wells express her sadness at the death of Dr Riaz, 'who was on the frontlines of the fight against COVID19 in Pakistan'. "The US stands with you," Wells tweeted.

She further paid tribute to all the brave medical workers across South and Central Asia who are risking their lives to help people and keep them safe.
