IS chief did not fight, was offered chance to surrender: US general

WASHINGTON: The Islamic State leader killed in the US raid in Syria did not put up a fight and was offered a chance to surrender, a US general said Thursday.

"Haji Abdullah did not fight," General Kenneth McKenzie, head of US Central Command, said using one of the alternative names of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.

"He killed himself and his immediate family without fighting, even as we attempted to call for his surrender and offered him a path to survive," the general told a news conference.
