LAHORE: Pakistan Mutthida Kisan Mahaz (PMKM) claimed here on Friday that wheat prices in the open market have crossed Rs.900 per maund as a result of its efforts to press the provincial and Federal governments to expedite their procurement exercise and ensure payment to the farmers at the government announced support price besides transportation charges.

PMKM Chief Ayub Khan Mayo in a statement said that the Chief Minister Punjab had directed his team to work in collaboration with the growers' organisations to effectively and smoothly run the wheat procurement drive. However, he said that growers adopted a strategy to keep the stocks of wheat at home and not to dispose it off but at the government announced rates. He said this strategy has resulted in stabilisation rather upward trend is being witnessed in wheat prices in the open market.

He said his party has appointed its various members including Sardar Murad Khan as coordinator Bahwalpur division, Jam Ramzan D. G. Khan, Rana Akhtar Multan, Shahzad Shafi Sahiwal, M Arshad Khan Faisalabad, Ch. Muhammad Zafar Gujranwala and Muhammad Iqbal as coordinator procurement for Lahore Division.
