An accountability court issued on Friday arrest warrants for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Toshakhana reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Judge Asghar Ali took up the reference filed against former PM's Yousuf Raza Gilani, Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari. During the hearing, neither Zardari nor any representative of Sharif appeared. Sharif is currently in London seeking medical treatment.

NAB requested the court to issue arrest warrants for the accused, local media reported. The court rejected the bureau's request to arrest Abdul Majeed Ghan and Gilani and issued arrests warrants for only Sharif.

The court exempted Zardari from appearing before the court. The judge has summoned Zardari and others to appear before the court on June 11.

NAB has alleged that Sharif and Zardari received government cars during the tenure of Gillani in 2009. The cars were gifted to Pakistan by the UAE and Libya.
