Athar Shah Khan dies

Legendary comedian, poet and writer Athar Shah Khan Jaidi passed away here on Sunday at the age of 77. He was under treatment at a local hospital after suffering a stroke.

During his carried spanned over three decades, Athar Khan performed in numerous plays and drama serials and entertained television audience for several years both as artist, poet and writer. In late 80s, he played the famous character of Jaidi in a play which was aired on television increasing his popularity among both the elders and youth.

Jaidi started his career as a writer from Radio Pakistan and wrote at least 700 plays during his entertainment career. One of his hit serials was "Jedi ke sang". His other popular drama serials during 1970s and 1990s include Intezar Farmaiay, Lakhon mein teen, Ba adab ba mulahiza hoshiyar and Haye jaidi.

He was awarded Pride of Performance by Government of Pakistan for his services.

Athar Shah has left behind a widow and four sons.

Meanwhile, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on Sunday expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of famous comedian Athar Shah Khan Jaidi.

In a tweet, he said that the deceased as a comedian spread happiness in lives of the viewers and gave a new dimension to humour.

The minister said that the characters played by Athar Shah Khan would be remembered for long time.

He prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss with fortitude.-Agencies
