SBP to not issue fresh currency notes this Eid

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced that it will not fresh currency notes this Eid-ul-Fitr, as part of its measures to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

SBP issues new currency notes of denomination Rs10, 20, 50, and 100 worth billions on Eid-ul-Fitr every year. Citizens receive new currency notes through SMS service which are used to give Eid. However, the central bank has announced that new currency notes will not be issued to the public on Eid-ul-Fitr this year, nor will new notes be issued to employees.

“Accordingly, the Bank’s COVID-19 committee chaired by DG (Banking & FMRM) in its meeting held on April 29, 2020, has decided NOT to issue fresh notes to the general public and employee and Its subsidiaries on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr 2020,” read SBP circular.

The State Bank of Pakistan has issued instructions to all chief managers regarding new currency notes on Eid-ul-Fitr this year. The central bank says the decision was made to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
