Partly Facetious: 'A nation of contrary people'

04 Jan, 2020

"We are a nation of contrary people."

"I don't get it."

"Well we say one thing one day and say the opposite the next day."

"You are not by chance referring to u-turns are you?"

"Well yes those too."

"The Khan says U-turns are not on objectives but on the means to those objectives."

"But didn't he criticise the means employed by his predecessors?"

"Well the means they employed never achieved the objectives."

"So this time around it will be different you reckon?"

"Time will tell."

"Sixteen to seventeen months are not enough...."

"Evidently not, but mind the most recent u-turn by the Sharif family with respect to unconditional support for a bill...."

"Hey if you are referring to the army chief's extension then let me say that the bill proposed by The Khan is not person specific."

"Whatever, the fact remains that Nawaz Sharif has taken a decision that Nawaz Sharif would have never supported had PML-N been in government."

"Perhaps the objective, as The Khan states..."

"Don't be facetious but anyway when I said we are a nation of contrary people I wasn't referring to any bill or any party or any politician - I just drove to office and I saw cars driving at a very slow speed on the right side of the road; now we drive on the left so shouldn't the slow car drivers drive their car on the left?"

"Well they drive on the left on the assumption that they can speed at any moment so..."

"Don't be facetious, that's a recipe for an accident."

"Well some drive on the right because they want to make a turning on the right."

"Surely they don't need to drive on the right two kilometers before the turning."

"Better safe than sorry!"

"Don't be facetious.

"Well I would suggest that parliament does what it is supposed to and pass a bill making Pakistan a right hand drive country and then we will all drive on the left."

"You know you may have something there!"
