Virk says it is not possible to consolidate child-related laws

Convener of Sub-Committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk on Friday said it was not possible to consolidate all child related laws.

The National Assembly Committee on Law and Justice headed by Riaz Fatyana during its meeting on November 27 constituted a sub-committee led by Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) Nafisa Shah, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Shunila Ruth and Kishwar Zehra from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as its members to consolidate laws relating to children within 30 days.

The main committee decided on November 27 to club all laws related to women and children so that their interpretation and implementation can be made uniform.

Virk while chairing the meeting said that consolidation of all laws related to children is not possible but a directory or manual of these laws can be prepared.

Abid Ali, an official of Ministry of Law and Justice, told the committee that there are a total of eight laws regarding children. He also said that consolidation of these laws is not possible.

However, a representative of civil society told the committee that there are 108 laws having clauses regarding child rights. He said that categories under the title of health and education, etc, can be made but consolidation is not possible.
