MOSCOW: China has offered Russia a "new model of cooperation" in the natural gas sphere and hopes to start talks based on the initiative, a senior Chinese energy official said on Saturday during a visit to Moscow.

The remark by Liu Tienan, head of China's National Energy Administration, indicated Beijing is seeking progress towards a deal - long stymied by price disputes - that would make China Russia's largest single pipeline gas customer.
