'Western media's double standards'

Updated 17 Oct, 2019

What else could an embittered prime minister of Pakistan had said after observing Western media's double standards. A Business Recorder editorial has appropriately summoned up prime minister's lament in this regard. It has spelled out the reason behind Western media's approach to both Hong Kong and Kashmir issues: "Hong Kong is played up to show China in a bad light, and Kashmir disregarded because it exposes gross human rights violations by India, an attractive market for Western countries' goods and military hardware. The unsavoury reality is that the independent Western media are not so independent when it comes to covering events in countries where their governments' interests are involved. Political agendas take precedence over what the people need to know."

It is about time the Western media started adhering to some cardinal principles of journalism; one of which is objectivity.
