Protesters throng UK streets against parliament suspension

31 Aug, 2019

Protests are underway across Britain as hundreds of thousands protesters took to the streets on Saturday to demonstrate against Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend parliament.

Mass protests are expected in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland while more than 80 demonstrations are also due to take place over the next week.

The protests erupted after British prime minister requested the Queen on Wednesday to suspend the UK parliament from mid-September. His request was approved by the Queen, which means no debates and votes will be held.

Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn has also encouraged everyone to join in the demonstration. "The public outrage at Boris Johnson shutting down democracy has been deafening. People are right to take to the streets - and I encourage everyone to join the demonstrations in London and across the country tomorrow," Corbyn wrote on Twitter.
