Al-Azizia Steel Mill case: Nawaz files plea seeking exemption from appearance

09 Apr, 2019

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday filed an application in Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking exemption from appearance during hearing of his appeal against Al-Azizia Steel Mill verdict, which is scheduled for Tuesday (today).
The application cited Supreme Court's verdict granting suspension of his sentence on medical ground for the exemption. "Nawaz is undergoing multiple medical tests and examination for treatment of various ailments including chronic kidney disease and coronary heart disease," it said. The appellant maintained that he could not attend the hearing in current situation. Advocate Ibrahim Haroon will represent him in the court.
Sharif is currently staying at his Jati Umra residence in Raiwind and receiving treatment from Sharif Medical City - a private medical facility owned by the Sharif family. Previously he was imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore. An accountability court in Islamabad convicted him in Al-Azizia/Hill Metals Establishment corruption references filed by National Accountability Bureau.
