Kartarpur Corridor: Experts agree on border fencing

20 Mar, 2019

Technical teams of both India and Pakistan met on Tuesday at the designated zero point to discuss different aspects of the Kartarpur corridor project.
The meeting, which was attended by technical experts from both the sides, lasted for about three hours, sources said, adding: "Technical experts indicated areas related to the Corridor. Both sides would set up border fencing around the Kartarpur Corridor."
The sources further said that representatives from both the sides will present survey reports regarding Tuesday's meeting to their respective sides. Following the survey reports, there will be a consensus on crossing points between the two countries. The next round of meeting will be held on April 2 at Wagah.
Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal had announced the meeting between technical experts of the two countries following a meeting between Pakistan and Indian delegations in Attari on March 14.
It may be added that both sides earlier held detailed and constructive discussions on various aspects and provisions of the proposed agreement and agreed to work towards expeditiously operationalising the Kartarpur Corridor.
Following a constructive meeting held in a cordial environment on March 14 to finalize the modalities for the Kartarpur corridor's opening, the technical teams of both countries held discussions pertaining to technical aspects of the project during Tuesday's meeting.
The project, with 40 percent of the work already done, is being anticipated to be completed just before the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in 2019 with a community-wide groundbreaking ceremony for Sikh pilgrims at the Gurdwara in Kartarpur Sahib.
The much-awaited corridor will connect Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Kartarpur - the final resting place of Sikh faith's founder Guru Nanak Dev - with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India's Gurdaspur district and facilitate visa-free movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib.
