A transgender was killed while two others sustained injuries when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in district Karak on Wednesday morning. According to details, the transgender persons were returning to Peshawar after attending a musical event in KP's Karak district when their vehicle came under attack.
A transgender named as Jahangir from Mansehra died on the spot while two of his associates Mushtaq a resident of Peshawar and Arshad from Swabi got injured. Police launched a search operation in the area to nab the suspects. The transgender community regularly comes under attack in the north-western province.
The injured were first shifted to district headquarters hospital Kohat and then they were moved to Peshawar for treatment. "We were returning from music function when we were attacked with gun fire in the dark of the night. We lost one of our colleagues in the attack but don't know who is behind the attack", Mushtaq told media.
Last year, the Alliance for Transgender and Inter-sex Community (TransAction) claimed that incidents of violence against them and hate crimes perpetrated by the police administration in various districts were on the rise. Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qazi Jamil of Peshawar had formed a four-member high-level committee to submit a comprehensive report on the incidents of violence against the transgender community in KP. The decision to form a committee came after frequent reports surfaced of transgender persons being mugged, assaulted and harassed regularly across the city.
