Affected traders to start getting alternate shops within a week: Mayor

Addressing the members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) during a visit to the KCCI Office, here on Thursday, the Mayor said balloting for the shops will be held at the Commissioner Karachi Office in the presence of two representatives each from markets. He said the traders will be given an opportunity to do their business in a transparent manner.

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr.Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, other Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) officers and office bearers of the KCCI attended the meeting.

The Mayor said that the officers who promoted encroachments will also be identified. The Mayor said the KMC will give alternate place to its tenants.

"We will not leave these people helpless," he added. He, however, said all those who utilised government land wrongly will get nothing.

The KMC had given them 4 X 4 shops and they did all illegal and wrong works like establishing hotels, warehouses and ice factories which was not right in any way, he added.

He said the weekly report of anti-encroachments is being submitted on every Friday. He said hawkers' zone should be established for pushcart owners and other such vendors so they also have the opportunity to earn respectable livelihood.

Wasim Akhtar asked the KCCI to donate or help in removing the debris in the city.

He said Karachi should get water and gas according to its needs as progress in the city would mean progress of the country.

Earlier, KCCI President Junaid Ismail presented welcome address whereas Siraj Qasim Teli, Zubair Motiwala and former president A.Q Khalil also spoke.
