Taking notice of a recent statement given by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry regarding the transfer of Islamabad's inspector general of police (IGP), the Supreme Court (SC) has summoned him to appear before it.

A three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice (CJP) Saqib Nisar took up the suo motu hearing on Wednesday. During the hearing, the CJP expressed his anger and lashed out at the information minister for making an 'an irresponsible' statement, local media reported.

He said that the minister's statements had indirectly ridiculed the court. The bench summoned Chaudhry and adjourned the hearing.

Addressing the media in Islamabad on Tuesday, Chaudhry had said that a prime minister has executive powers and will exercise them. He added that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Jan Mohammad had multiple complaints filed against him non-cooperative attitude.

Information Minstry's statement had come after the SC suspended on Monday the government’s order for the transfer of the Islamabad IGP. During the hearing, the SC was informed that the transfer had taken place on PM Khan’s orders. The apex court also sought a written explanation from the government regarding the transfer.
