15 held, contraband goods worth Rs 1.17 billion seized: DI&I

Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation- FBR Anti-Smuggling, Karachi on Wednesday claimed to have arrested 15 persons and seized contraband goods worth Rs 1.17 billion during last six months. According to its six-month performance review, the directorate during its anti-smuggling drive conducted raids at different localities in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur and took a huge quantity of electronics goods, tyres, plastic granules, diesel, cloth, tea, cigarettes, chewing tobaccos and duty un-paid vehicles including 27 prime movers.
It said that some 2100 tyres, 151, 000 kilogram of plastic granules, 0.24 million litres of POL products and 70 vehicles were confiscated during last six months. It further said that during the said drive, some 15 persons involved in this illicit business had been nabbed and challan in this regard were submitted in the Customs Court. Meanwhile, Director Muhammad Asif Marghoob Siddiqui said that Anti Smuggling Operation was conducted in line with the Anti-Smuggling strategy of FBR.
He further said that number of go-downs located in Industrial and Residential area were also raided that led the recovery of huge quantity smuggled diesel stored in the underground tanks. Besides myriad number of deep-freezers, fridge, television sets were also confiscated, which were brought into the country without paying duty & taxes. Moreover, he confirmed that the directorate had deposited Rs 80.4 million generated through auction and payment of duty and taxes under the order of Adjudicating Authorities to national kitty.
