Pakistan, rich in sunlight, wind and water resources, can play a leading role in global efforts to curb greenhouse emissions through working on clean-energy venture. The United States recently announced a major initiative against global climate change with focus on clean-energy. Signed by 81 of the largest companies in America, this eco-friendly agreement will ensure a low-carbon, sustainable future, while recognising climate-change as a critical threat to humanity.
By signing this 'American Business Act' based on a climate-pledge, these 81 companies are demonstrating an ongoing commitment to reduce their carbon footprint and invest in cleaner energy resources. This 'climate pledge' recognises more than 150 countries that are already committed to meeting their defined climate targets, through ambitious, company-specific goals such as: reducing emissions by as much as 50 percent, purchasing 100 percent renewable energy, reducing water usage by as much as 80 percent, achieving 'zero' waste-to-landfill and pursuing 'zero' net-deforestation in supply chains. "This is yet another indicator of global acceptance of clean energy and we must all realise that the time to act is now," said Inam ur Rahman, CEO of Reon Energy Solutions, in a statement.
Most of the corporate names involved in this pledge were already present in Pakistan and ought to pursue this initiative locally too, he said. "Investments in the renewable energy realm shall help reduce Pakistan's dependence on fossil fuels," he said The Climate Action Plan will cut nearly six billion tons of carbon pollution through 2030, while the Clean Power Plan will reduce emissions by 32 percent from the energy sector by 2030. Similar programmes, if implemented in Pakistan, can help reshape the energy paradigm.
