Major crops: farmers urge government to fix support prices

The Kissan Raaj Tehreek (KRT) of Kissan Board Pakistan (KBP) on Friday staged a protest near D-Chowk and demanded of the government to fix support price of major crops and ensure provision of electricity at flat rate to agricultural tube wells. A large number of farmer's representatives from different districts of the Punjab took part in the protest. The protesters were holding placard and banners inscribed with slogans, urged the government to provide relief to the farmer community.
The Kissan Raaj Tehreek of KBP was started on October 5 from Sadiqabad. Heavy contingent of police personnel were deployed on the occasion to avert any untoward incident. The city police also blocked all roads leading to the protest venue due to which motorists faced a lot of problems.
The protester urged the government to fix support price of major crops including Cotton Rs 4000 per mound, Basmati rice Rs 2500 per mound, Sugarcane Rs 250 per mound, Wheat Rs 1500 per mound and Maiz Rs 1800 per mound. The also demanded of the government to provide electricity to agricultural tube wells at low rates as well as provide property rights to tenants of military farms, seed farms, Ghori farms and Cholistan scheme.
They urged the government to provide free of cost seed, fertiliser to farmers belonging to flood-affected areas for cultivation of new crops as well as waive off their loan. Chairman KRT Arslan said that we have presented our demands to the government and if they failed to address our demands, we will again stage protest.
