08 Oct, 2015

President of Korangi Association Trade and Industry (KATI), Zahid Saeed has demanded a complete ban on dumping of debris and garbage along Malir River bank and causeway that connects Korangi Industrial Area to the city. He urged the commissioner, administrator of Karachi and departments concerned to ensure strict implementation of ban on dumping of garbage in Malir River.
He said that KATI, industrialists of Korangi area, environmental experts, media and other social organisations had been demanding a ban on dumping in Malir River for many years, but the city administration and the department of Sindh had failed to impose a ban on garbage dumping.
He further said that the Government of Sindh under Section 144 (6) Cr P C had imposed a complete ban on dumping of garbage or any other material/waste in the Malir River in 2014 and Home Department, Sindh also issued a notification in this regard but this order had not been implemented yet.
Saeed said that a number of times, they had intimated the provincial and district governments that in case of heavy rain in the city; Korangi Industrial Area and neighbouring of expressway could face flood-like situation. Malir River starts from the north-east of Karachi and passes through in the middle of the city and falls into Arabian Sea. Sewerage of Korangi industrial area and most of the city depends on this waterway but due to dumping of solid waste, the city could face critical consequences, he warned, adding that dumping activity alongside causeway is also harmful for environment of the locality.
