Traditional Iftar stalls prove a boon for the poor

09 Jul, 2015

Old tradition of arranging Iftar on roadsides, traffic intersections and near shopping centres and mosques for the poor, passersby and travelling people was continuing unabated in the city despite the fact that prices of food items have increased manifold in Ramazan. However, a marked decline in such activities has been noted during this Ramazan probably due to skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
For many years, citizens had been voluntarily arranging Iftar on roadsides, near traffic intersections, markets and a number of people, including drivers of buses, rickshaw, taxis and other traveling people, could be seen having their Iftar at such places. Philanthropists, market associations, welfare organisations and well-to-do people contribute generously for organising Iftar on roadsides, traffic intersections and in front of major markets and mosques.
Though the tradition of arranging Iftar on roadsides and traffic intersections had initially begun at major thoroughfares of the city, it has now spread in every nook and cranny of the metropolis with the passage of time. Now one could see such generous activities on various major thoroughfares of the city, outside different mosques and shopping centres.
In some markets, shopkeepers collect money and different food items daily from shop owners and hand them over to committees set up for organising Iftar for the poor, passersby and travelling people. Moreover, wealthy and well-to-do people take active part in organising such roadside Iftar stalls and distribute mineral water among fasting people.
One could spot such Iftar stalls near Hassan Square, Jamia Cloth Market, Denso Hall, Tariq Road, Sharea Faisal, Burnes Road, Guru Mandir, Bhadurabad, Saddar, Empress Market, Karimabad, Old Exhibition, I I Chundirgar Road, M A Jinnah Road, Shah Waliullah Road, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, University Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Zaibunnisa Street, Khayaban-e-Shamshir, Gizri, Sea View, Rashid Minhas Road, Malir, Model Colony, Hyderi Market, Liaquabad, Five Star Chowrangi, Samama market, etc.
