Production of passenger cars increases by 20 percent in 5 months

Despite import of used cars in the country, production of locally assembled passenger cars increased by 20 percent ie from 44,769 to 52,238 units in the first five months of 2014-15 when compared to the corresponding period of 2013-14. The sale of cars increased from 45,666 to 49,203 units during this period.
However, according to production and sale statistics released by the Pakistan Association of Automotive Manufactures from July to November 2014, the sale of Honda Civic 1300 cc dropped from 3,982 to 2,853 and that of Honda City from 5,352 to 5,035 and that of Suzuki Swift (1300 cc) from 2,085 to 1,460.
There was a marked increase in the sale of Toyota Corolla (1300 cc) from 11,341 to 16,847 units during July to November 2014-15 as compared to same period of last year. In the category of 1000 cc cars sale of Suzuki Cultus dropped from 5,871 to 5,425 whereas sale of Suzuki Mehran (800 cc & below 1000cc) downed from 11,722 units to 10,604, sale of Suzuki Bolan upped from 5,252 to 5,414. Meanwhile, production and sale of tractors continued to increase after reduction in the GST that reached 20,568 units in the first seven months of the current financial year when compared to figure of 13,537 units of the same period of last year.
