Partly Facetious: Why lotaism remains an indigenous concept

23 Oct, 2014

"Mian sahib is becoming an authority on how to make enemies and to de-influence people."
"What poppycock. The name of the book is how to make friends and influence people. Besides I don't think there is a word de-influence."
"There is a word now. This is Pakiland - the land of the pure and need I add since we cannot be purely good, that's a rather challenging proposition, we go for being purely bad. And I am glad to say we are forging ahead of all other nations by contributing to the world dictionary."
"Never heard of a world dictionary!"
"There you go, that's another of our contributions."
"What other word have we contributed to your world dictionary?"
"Well, all tourists who visit Pakistan learn the word lota and the concept of lotaism. I know the PPP co-chairman focuses on Bhuttoism but I can't find that anywhere other than during a PPP jalsa but lota and lotaism is a must word to learn if you visit this country."
"I thought we didn't have any tourism to speak of."
"There you go, that's why lotaism remains an indigenous concept..."
"Don't be facetious."
"And more recently the concept of Gullu Butt, I mean the name has come to symbolise...symbolise public-private partnership."
"You are being facetious."
"You have a better definition."
"Well, it represents...represents..."
"Excessive empowerment of a grass root political supporter? I mean who needs local bodies elections when we have empowerment at such a level..."
"Good heavens".
"What would you say to that?"
"I blame the media, had Gullu Butt in action not been shown on our television screens this new word as you put it would not have seen the light of day."
"And our lexicon would have been that much the poorer."
