Pakistan has congratulated the people of Afghanistan on successful holding of the second round of presidential elections. In a statement issued late Saturday night, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam stated that the Afghan people, once again, demonstrated a firm resolve to determine their future through democratic means.
"The Afghan electoral institutions bear the crucial responsibility of ensuring successful completion of the next steps in the electoral process," she said, adding that in fulfilment of its commitment to support the efforts for peaceful elections, Pakistan reinforced the security arrangements along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border through additional deployment of troops, increased patrolling and aerial surveillance.
"We extend our best wishes to the Afghan people as they continue to move forward in this historic journey and take determined steps for peaceful democratic transition and greater stability in Afghanistan," she added.
