According to Larry Summers, former United States Treasury Secretary for the Bush and Obama Administration, in an interview with Fareed Zakaria, he stated that if the United States handled the pandemic as well as Pakistan, "we would have saved in neighbourhood of $10 trillion".

Summers added that the initial cost of an expanded testing and public healthcare system are trivial as compared to the sheer human cost of hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Furthermore, he added that the Trump Administration should be making investments in renewing the country's crumbling infrastructure, supporting local governments, facilitating the unemployed, while also reinforcing a robust public healthcare system.
