RCCI wants CPEC a smuggling free corridor

The government should negotiate with the Chinese government to evolve a policy to have joint ventures between Pakistan and China for long lasting win-win cooperation.

The joint ventures between Chinese and Pakistani companies will increase ownership of the key stakeholders.Labour-intensive industry from China under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will be set up in Pakistan to boost local employment.

President Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) Raja Amer Iqbal said while addressing a press conference on concluding session of All Pakistan Chamber Presidents Committee meeting on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) here Thursday. Amir Iqbal said CPEC is the flagship project of multi-billion dollar One belt one road (OBOR) and success of this key mega project will bring a economic revolution in the country and the region. However, he said the agreements must be followed by law of the land and benefit Pakistani trader, investors, and industrialists must be on priority. CPEC must not lead to smuggling as in the case of Afghan Transit Trade.

We demand a strong security system to monitor exchange of goods via CPEC route, he added. "We want CPEC a smuggling free corridor", RCCI President said.

He demanded that 85pc local labour must be employed in CPEC projects, the move will lead to local ownership of the projects and make it successful, he added.

Representatives from Board of Investment, presidents from more than 33 chambers including Lahore, Hazara, Haripur, Gilgit, Sialkot and Chakwal, Senior leadership of RCCI, members of the executive committee and a large number of traders attended the meeting.
