Annual inflation rises by 3.93pc in June

ISLAMABAD: Consumer Price Index (CPI) on year-on-year increased by 3.93 percent during June 2017 as compared to the same month of the last year.

On month-on-month basis, the inflation witnessed a decline of 0.41 per cent in June 2017 over May 2017, said Chief Statistician Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) Asif Bajwa here on Monday.

Presenting data of monthly inflation figures during a press conference, Asif Bajwa said average CPI based inflation during the year 2016-17 (July-June) increased by 4.16 per cent as compared to the same period of previous year.

Meanwhile according to data released by the PBS on Monday, during the month of June 2017, the prices of bananas, apples, tomatoes, potatoes and eggs increased by 29.29 per cent, 10 per cent, 9.41 per cent and 8.25 per cent respectively over last month (May 2017).

Similarly, the prices of shoes, ginger, and stitching of clothes also increased during the month by 4.2 per cent, 3.19 per cent and 1.93 per cent respectively.

Whereas, items which witnessed decreased in their prices during the month include cigarettes (23.84 per cent), mangoes (18.49 per cent), plumb (30.95 per cent), lemon (17.47 per cent), bitter gourd (9.8 per cent), and petrol (1.62 per cent).

The PBS collects the retail and the wholesale prices and computes the CPI and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) on monthly basis while the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) is calculated on weekly basis.
