Georgian soldiers travel near the city of Gori, close to the South Ossetian boundary. Following the escalation in fighting between Georgian forces and separatist militia in the breakaway region of South Ossetia in August, Russian troops intervened and for a while occupied parts of Georgia outside of South Ossetia. They later pulled back under a ceasefire brokered by President Nicolas Sarkozy of France.

Lars Lindqvist is a photojournalist based in Stockholm, Sweden. As a staff photographer for the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, he gets to travel around the world. In 2008, Lindqvist won a World Press Photo second prize, in the General News category, for a story from Georgia – a place he revisited in 2010. This year, he made several trips to Japan during which he took the photos that earned him his second World Press Photo award.
