According to the 2017 Global Drug Survey, magic mushrooms have been tagged as the safest of all drugs for people to take recreationally.

During their survey, the researchers questioned more than 120,000 people in 50 various countries. The results showed that only 0.2% claimed that the drug caused them to take emergency medical attention after taking the hallucinogenic drug psilocybin.

Comparing it with other drugs, the study showed that 4.8% of 1500 people required medical attention after taking methamphetamine and 3.2% of 1300 people needed treatment after intake of cannabis.

The founder of the Global Drug Survey Adam Winstock informed The Guardian, “Magic mushrooms are one of the safest drugs in the world. Death from toxicity is almost unheard of with poisoning with more dangerous fungi being a much greater risk in terms of serious harms.”

The survey also showed that after mushrooms, cannabis is considered the second safest drug followed by LSD, Cocaine, Amphetamine, Ecstasy and alcohol. However, meth and synthetic pot are the two most dangerous recreational drugs.

According to New York Post, the research summary stated, “People who use psychedelics are generally very sensible and show some of the best preparation and adoption of harm reduction practices of any drug.”

Along with their recreational use, magic mushrooms are also believed to be able to cure severe depression and anxiety.

But nonetheless, mushrooms aren’t entirely harmless. Winstock warned, “Combined use with alcohol and use within risky or unfamiliar settings increase the risks of harm most commonly accidental injury, panic and short lived confusion, disorientation and fears of losing one’s mind. [Plan] your trip carefully with trusted company in a safe place and always know what mushrooms you are using.”
