Face masks are widely used in the Narodichi district, 80km from Chernobyl. It wasn't until 40 months after the nuclear disaster that the Soviet government decided to partly evacuate the area. In that time 190 deformed children had been born in contaminated villages.

Igor Kostin (Moldova, 1936) worked for 20 years as an industrial designer before becoming a photograper. He started his photographic career as a photographer for fashion magazines. In 1974, Kostin became a special photo correspondent for RIA Novosti in Ukraine.
